Stimulating the deprived motor ‘hand’ area causes facial muscle responses in one-handers

چکیده
How the brain adapts to absence of sensory inputs and motor outputs from early development is a key question in neuroscience. While deprivation has long been known trigger changes cortical maps cortex, e.g. due blindness [1], deafness [2] or arm malformation [3], there an ongoing debate on their functional relevance. For example, using fMRI, we have previously reported that deprived sensorimotor hand territory individuals born without shows increased activity evoked by movements lips, feet residual arm, when compared two-handed controls [4,5].

Switching handedness: fMRI study of hand motor control in right-handers, left-handers and converted left-handers.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the differences in the brain organization of motor control in left- and right-handers and to study whether early left-to-right handwriting switch changes the cortical representation of finger movements in the left and right hemispheres. Echo-planar MR imaging was performed in 52 subjects: consistent right-handers (RH), consistent left-handers (LH), a...
متن کاملPeri-hand space representation in the absence of a hand – Evidence from congenital one-handers
The space immediately surrounding us is known to be represented relative to our hands, i.e. in a hand-centred coordinate system (peri-hand space, PHS) (Graziano, Hu, & Gross, 1997; for review see; Brozzoli, Makin, Cardinali, Holmes, & Farn e, 2012). Individuals born without a hand (hereafter onehanders) manually interact with the world differently, potentially altering the representation of the...
متن کاملOne hand or the other? Effector selection biases in right and left handers.
Much debate in the handedness literature has centred on the relative merits of questionnaire-based measures assessing hand preference versus simple movement tasks such as peg moving or finger tapping, assessing hand performance. A third paradigm has grown in popularity, which assesses choices by participants when either hand could be used to execute movements. These newer measures may be useful...
متن کاملRepresentation of Multiple Body Parts in the Missing-Hand Territory of Congenital One-Handers
Individuals born without one hand (congenital one-handers) provide a unique model for understanding the relationship between focal reorganization in the sensorimotor cortex and everyday behavior. We previously reported that the missing hand's territory of one-handers becomes utilized by its cortical neighbor (residual arm representation), depending on residual arm usage in daily life to substit...
متن کاملComparison of one-stage free gracilis muscle flap with two-stage method in chronic facial palsy
Abstract Background: Rehabilitation of facial paralysis is one of the greatest challenges faced by reconstructive surgeons today. The traditional method for treatment of patients with facial palsy is the two-stage free gracilis flap which has a long latency period of between the two stages of surgery. Methods: In this paper, we prospectively compared the results of the one-stage gracilis flap ...
